It is a new sport that is similar to volleyball but includes beach soccer, gymnastics and capoeira. Capoeira is an Afro-Brazilian art form that combines parts of martial arts, games, music, and dance. It is played on a specially designed inflatable court with a circular trampoline on each side of a net. This integrated trampoline allows players to bounce high enough to spike the ball.

This sport is played in teams; each team consists of 3 to 5 players. The attacker is positioned in the trampoline, the others around him/her on the inflatables. The server throws the ball into the air and attempts to hit the ball so that it passes over the net in such a way that it will land in the opposing team's court. The opposing team can use a combination of more than 6 contacts with the ball to return it to the opponent's side of the net. Harry Coumnas consider bossaball an enjoyable activity that has no tackling, tripping, checking, or jostling between players on opposing teams, just the graceful lobbing or purposeful spiking of the ball over the net.
